After graduating from Hitotsubashi University with a degree in Sociology, Michiaki Matsushima joined NHK Publishing, Ltd. in 1996. From 2000, he handled Ryu Murakami’s email magazine JMM (Japan Mail Media) and its accompanying book series, and from 2004 he expanded his activities in the book translation field to include copyright acquisition, editing, and promotion of Japanese translations of Western books. In 2014, he was appointed Editor-in-Chief of the Editorial Department of Gakugei Tosho Co., Ltd., a publisher specializing in educational and psychology titles. In this position, he handled a slew of best sellers including Free: The Future of a Radical Price and Makers: The New Industrial Revolution (both by Chris Anderson), and The Singularity is Near: When Humans Transcend Biology (by Ray Kurzweil), all of which attempt to grasp the paradigm shift towards the digital society, as well as Japanese editions of the 2015 Japanese business book award-winning title ZERO to ONE (by Blake Masters and Peter Thiel), The Zero Marginal Cost Society (by Jeremy Rifkin), and the Amazon Best Book of the Year, The Inevitable: Understanding the 12 Technological Forces That Will Shape Our Future (by Kevin Kelly). In June 2018, he joined Condé Nast Japan as Head of Editorial Content at WIRED Japan, in which capacity he oversees the content for the entire WIRED brand, including WIRED Japan magazine (latest issue: Vol. 54, special feature: “The Regenerative City”), the WIRED.jp website, the subscription service SZ Membership, the video series The Big Interview, WIRED Conference, and the WIRED Sci-Fi Prototyping Lab. In 2021, he was appointed as a Moonshot Ambassador for the Japanese Cabinet Office. His translations include Novacene (by Bryan Appleyard and James Lovelock). He is originally from Tokyo and currently lives in Kamakura.
