Prof. Dr. Christian SCHWARZENEGGER

Following his studies at the University of Zurich, Prof. Dr. Christian Schwarzenegger earned his doctoral degree in 1992 and, a year later, was admitted to the bar in the canton of Schaffhausen. From 1994 to 1999 he served as an Assistant Professor at two universities in Japan. Since 1999, he has been holding a Chair in Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure Law, and Criminology at UZH. From 2010 to 2014, he was Vice Dean and Dean of the Faculty of Law, and since 2014 he has been Vice President of the University of Zurich.

Prof. Dr. Christian Schwarzenegger's research focuses on family violence, cybercrime and end-of-life decisions. He regularly conducts empirical research in the fields of police studies and crime prevention. He has also published commentaries, books and articles on criminal law and criminal procedure law. He served as expert for Swiss Television (SRF) in over 50 crime documentaries, the last one being «Death on the Matterhorn» (SRF/BBC 2015).

Until 2020, Prof. Dr. Christian Schwarzenegger was the lead for International Affairs. He has launched the first internationalization strategy for the University of Zurich (2014 – 2020), which has already resulted in a step change in the international outlook of the University and its visibility across the globe. The measures put in place with the new strategy have resulted in various new international services as well as strategic partnerships and network activities, including joining Universitas 21.
